5-Day Devotional Next Level Sermon Series - Part 2 Denial

October 14, 2024

The Call to Deny Yourself

  • Luke 9:23: "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me."

Devotional Thought:

Jesus presents self-denial as a daily commitment. The world often encourages us to prioritize our desires and ambitions, but to follow Christ, we are called to deny these things, placing His will above our own. Just as Jesus denied Himself in obedience to God’s plan, we too must surrender our lives. This is not a call to deprivation but a path to true life in Him.

Additional Scripture Readings:

  • Matthew 16:24-26 – Jesus invites us to lose our life to find it.

  • John 12:24-25 – The grain of wheat must fall and die to bear fruit.

Reflection Question:

In what area of your life is Jesus asking you to let go of control and surrender to His leading?

Paul’s Example of Loss for Christ

  • Philippians 3:7-8: "But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord."

Devotional Thought:

Paul had every worldly reason to boast—he had status, success, and religious zeal. Yet, he considered it all rubbish compared to knowing Christ. This shows us that true value is found in our relationship with Jesus, not in worldly achievements. When we let go of our attachments to earthly success, we gain something far greater—intimacy with Christ.

Additional Scripture Readings:

  • 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 – Paul boasts in his weaknesses so Christ's power can be shown.

  • Hebrews 12:1-2 – Letting go of every weight to run with perseverance.

Reflection Question:

What personal accomplishments or possessions are you tempted to rely on instead of Christ, and how can you begin to count them as loss?

The Power in Weakness

  • Philippians 3:10: "I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death."

Devotional Thought:

Paul didn’t just want to know Christ; he wanted to experience His power. This includes not only the resurrection but also sharing in His sufferings. We often seek the power of Christ without being willing to share in His sufferings. Yet, it’s through our trials and sacrifices that we grow deeper in our relationship with Him and become more like Him.

Additional Scripture Readings:

  • 2 Timothy 2:11-13 – If we die with Him, we will also live with Him.

  • Romans 5:3-5 – Suffering produces perseverance, character, and hope.

Reflection Question:

How can you embrace the challenges in your life as a way to grow in your dependence on Christ and experience His resurrection power?

Reprioritizing for Christ

  • Matthew 6:33 (NIV)"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."

Devotional Thought:

As we pursue self-denial, it’s important to remember that our priorities must shift. Jesus calls us to seek His kingdom above all else. When He becomes our first priority, worldly distractions lose their appeal. Our desires are transformed, and we begin to focus on what truly matters—living a life that reflects Christ’s love and purpose.

Additional Scripture Readings:

  • Colossians 3:1-2 – Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things.

  • James 4:8 – Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.

Reflection Question:

What priorities in your life might be distracting you from seeking God’s kingdom first, and how can you reorder them?

Finding Life Through Self-Denial

  • Matthew 10:39: "Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it."

Devotional Thought:

Jesus calls us to a life of paradox—by losing our lives, we find them. This is the essence of self-denial: surrendering our ambitions, comforts, and control to gain the life that only Jesus can offer. It’s a challenging but rewarding call. When we surrender our lives for His sake, we discover a deeper purpose, fulfillment, and joy that the world cannot offer.

Additional Scripture Readings:

  • Romans 12:1 – Present your body as a living sacrifice.

  • Galatians 2:20 – “I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.”

Reflection Question:

In what ways are you still holding on to "finding your life" apart from Jesus, and how can you release that control to find true life in Him?
