5 Day Devotional Next Level Sermon Series - Part 4 Decision

Understanding the Call to Follow

  • Luke 9:23 - “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross daily, and follow me."

  • Matthew 16:24-25 - Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. "

Devotional Thought:

In Luke 9:23, Jesus makes it clear that following Him involves more than belief—it calls us to action and sacrifice. He asks us to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Him daily. The decision to follow Jesus is transformative; it goes beyond mere words and invites us into a daily commitment that will redefine our lives. Much like the pastor’s story about choosing a new path, following Christ often leads us into unexpected but beautiful places when we trust His lead.

Question for Reflection:

What "cross" is Jesus asking me to take up today?

Counting the Cost

  • Romans 12:2 - "Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect."

  • John 15:19 - "The world would love you as one of its own if you belonged to it, but you are no longer part of the world. I chose you to come out of the world, so it hates you."

Devotional Thought:

Romans 12:2 reminds us not to conform to this world but to let our minds be renewed by God. Deciding to follow Jesus means we have to live differently, even if it makes us feel out of place. The world may not understand our commitment, but we are called to a higher purpose and standard. Like the disciples who left everything to follow Jesus, we, too, are invited to lay down our comfort and take on His purpose for our lives.

Question for Reflection:

Are there areas in my life where I still conform to worldly standards rather than following God’s call?

The Consequences of Inaction

  • Luke 9:24-26 - If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but are yourself lost or destroyed? If anyone is ashamed of me and my message, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person when he returns in his glory and in the glory of the Father and the holy angels."

  • Proverbs 20:22 - "Don’t say, 'I will get even for this wrong.' Wait for the LORD to handle the matter."

Devotional Thought:

Jesus warns that holding onto our lives too tightly can lead to loss, while giving our lives to Him leads to true fulfillment. This world tempts us with messages of self-interest and instant gratification, but as followers of Christ, we are called to let go of selfish ambition. Proverbs 20:22 reminds us to trust God rather than seeking revenge or focusing on earthly success. Choosing to follow Jesus has eternal rewards, but the choice to ignore His call has lasting consequences.

Question for Reflection:

What might I be holding onto that prevents me from fully surrendering to Jesus?

A Life of Purpose

  • 1 John 2:28 - "And now, dear children, remain in fellowship with Christ so that when he returns, you will be full of courage and not shrink back from him in shame."

  • Revelation 3:11 - "I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take away your crown."

Devotional Thought:

1 John 2:28 encourages us to remain in fellowship with Christ, confident and unashamed when He returns. Daily devotion to Jesus transforms our focus, shifting it from temporary gains to eternal purpose. The pastor’s message challenges us to consider whether our lives reflect a commitment to Christ or are merely guided by convenience. God’s purpose in our lives unfolds daily as we choose to walk with Him and trust His timing, keeping our eyes fixed on the rewards He promises to the faithful.

Question for Reflection:

In what ways can I align my daily actions more closely with God’s purpose?

The Rewards of Faithful Decisions

  • 2 Timothy 4:7-8 - "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. And now the prize awaits me—the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of his return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to his appearing."

  • James 1:12 - "God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him."

  • 1 Corinthians 2:9 - "That is what the Scriptures mean when they say, 'No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.'”

Devotional Thought:

Paul reminds us in 2 Timothy 4:7-8 that there is a “crown of righteousness” for those who finish the race faithfully. Following Jesus means more than just accepting Him—it means choosing Him every day. Our decisions for Christ will yield eternal rewards and honor that surpass anything we can imagine on earth. As we seek His will and stay steadfast in our walk, we gain the joy of being used by Him to impact others and fulfill the purpose He has set for us.

Question for Reflection:

What rewards am I seeking—worldly gains or eternal treasures?
